Oh I'm keeping this one forever. For a number of years it sat dead in the driveway because the engine just would not run right and it flunked emissions. Felt like no power, replaced just about everything. Well, then one day I was googling and I ran across a Merceedes with the same problem. They use the Bosch system as well as the 944S.
There's a second computer. YES! The second computer is only found on the 944S models because they have knock sensors. What happens is the Knock sensors and the hall sender on the distributor talk not to the DME but to a spark advance computer located under the driver's side headlight on the back. Little thing, totally boring. What happens though is in my case it went nuts and thought the engine was always knocking. So it would advance the timing to max on the first two cylinders, thus causing them to fire at 30 degrees *AFTER* TDC. When the exhaust port was open. Thus I was igniting and burning gasoline in the exhaust. Explains the glowing exhaust pipes on 1 and 2.
Replaced the little computer ($30 bucks) and it's been PERFECT ever since. Took it in for emissions in November 2004, it passed perfectly. It's like having a new car. With that out of the way I fixed the AC (converted to R134 and replaced the compressor.). Hint on that project: Replace the O rings at the compressor, replace the dryer (simple job actually), fill the system with the right amount of R134a oil (DON'T THINK YOU CAN GET AWAY WITHOUT DOING THIS) then evacuate the system with a vacuum pump. If you're like me and can't afford a $300 pump, just get a hand brake pump, hook it to the top schrader valve with the clear hose, depress the valve stem thru the hose with a screwdriver against the hose, then pump it down manually. I was able to draw 28mm of vacuum. Not perfect, but to be honest I got most of the air out which is the point. The new dryer takes care of the rest. And the system blows *COLD* now :-)
